The City of Fishers is committed to keeping its roadways and trails safe for all users, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. Utilizing the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe System Approach, the City aims to eliminate vehicle crashes resulting in serious injury or death. By prioritizing safety on our roadways and trails, we make Fishers a better place to live, work, and play.

Why Create a Safety Action Plan?

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021 created the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) discretionary program, appropriating $5 billion in grant funds over a five-year period from 2022 to 2026. Fishers was awarded an SS4A grant to complete a Safety Action Plan which outlines strategies to reduce and eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes. With a completed Safety Action Plan, Fishers’ safety projects and strategies will be eligible for additional grant funding.

Safety Action Task Force

The City of Fishers selected Lochmueller Group to lead the development of its Safe Streets & Trails Plan in conjunction with Compass Outreach Solutions and an internal Safety Action Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of members of the Fishers Engineering Department, Planning & Zoning Department, Community & Public Relations Department, and representatives from Fishers public safety teams.

To create a successful plan that meets the needs of our dynamic community, we need input from those who work, live, and play in Fishers.

What’s Next?

The project team will be working with the Safety Action Task Force to develop a comprehensive set of projects and strategies to address safety needs throughout Fishers. Strategies will be developed based on a data-driven analysis and a prioritization of equity considerations. A draft plan will be published in March of of this year for public review. A revised plan will be finalized and presented for final approval by City and federal leaders later this year. Once approved, this plan will provide the City with policies, programs, and infrastructure projects to achieve our goal of zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries.
