We’re excited to reveal that local artist Laila Lewis is the winner of our t-shirt design contest! Her stunning artwork will be featured on the participants’ t-shirts, giving those who register the chance to wear a piece of the event’s beauty and take home a lasting memory.
Meet the Artist
Laila, a senior at Fishers High School, is actively involved in her school and local community. She runs for the track team, serves as the Student Life and Design Editor on the yearbook staff, and is also involved in Future Black Leaders. Through her involvement, Laila demonstrates her dedication to making a positive impact while capturing meaningful moments. She often takes photos at school events and sports games, preserving memories of her peers and the community.
Her love for graphic design began with her work on the yearbook in school, which led to the creation of her brand, Laila Janae Designs. Through this platform, she shares her photography, designs, and animations. She also credits her mother, an artist, for surrounding her with art and creativity throughout her life.
After graduation, Laila is excited to study graphic design at Ball State University. Her goal is to become an Art Director, and eventually a Creative Director, where she can lead teams and shape brand identities. On both a professional and personal level, she is passionate about making a meaningful impact in the design world while cultivating a life filled with purpose and growth.
Creative Journey
When planning her t-shirt design, Laila focused on creating something both relevant and meaningful in a style that would excite not only her, but others as well. She studied past Geist Half Marathon designs to refine her vision by noting what she liked and disliked. To gain additional perspectives, she shared her ideas with her father, a firefighter and marathon runner, as well as her mother, who is an artist.
Her strategic vision and keen eye for detail are evident in every element of the design, particularly in the choice of colors and overall aesthetic. She intentionally opted for soothing, calming tones to achieve a chic and sophisticated vibe with subtle, playful touches. The result? A perfect blend of minimalism and fun!
Her passion for digital art, combined with her love for sports media, logo design, graphics, and photography, has been a driving force behind this creative journey. These interests not only fueled her inspiration but also played a significant role in the process that led to the creation of this year’s winning t-shirt design.
Personal Passion for Running
Running has been a significant part of Laila’s life throughout high school. She competed in cross country as a sophomore and junior, and in track as a junior and senior.
Running is more than just a sport for Laila—it’s a lifestyle. In the summer, she enjoys jogging along the trails of Fishers, often accompanied by her favorite music while rocking vibrant running outfits.
Running is also a cherished family tradition. Every Thanksgiving morning, she and her father participate in the Wishbone 5K race, a tradition that has only deepened her love for the sport. Up next for her is the Geist Half Marathon. She’s eagerly anticipating the race, especially since she’ll be sporting her very own custom-designed gear while crossing the finish line.
