Local Business Spotlight: Scioto Biosciences

Fishers is home to Scioto Biosciences, a clinical stage biotech startup company dedicated to innovative research and discovery in the field of microbiome therapeutics. A large focus for Scioto Biosciences is optimizing microbiome delivery for the benefit of children and adults with autism and GI disorders.

Jim Schulz, Founder and Chief Financial Officer of Scioto Biosciences, has been in the biotech industry for over 20 years, working in both large and small pharmaceutical companies.

The company is currently working to develop drugs to help people who have two specific conditions – one for people with autism, and the other for premature necrotizing enterocolitis, a disease that affects premature infants.

“I just really like the science that’s being done nowadays and helping people out, whether it be in oncology or neuroscience,” said Schulz. “It’s really a passion of mine. We came across this drug and this technology and there’s not a lot out there for these indications, especially in the autism world. So we thought we could really make a difference for those with autism by developing this type of drug.”

Schulz helped choose Fishers for the company headquarters because after 31 years of living in the city, he’s grown to love the community, neighborhoods and businesses.

“The mayor and the entire city are very welcoming and open to new companies,” said Shulz. “They want to provide an opportunity for those that are interested in life sciences to relocate here and build their companies.”

Scioto Biosciences researchers also work in a lab space in downtown Indianapolis. Schulz says the company is interested in relocating the entire team to Fishers in the future.
