Fishers Snow Fight

During winter weather, the City of Fishers works to keep roads and trails safe through coordinated snow and ice control operations. The Department of Public Works monitors conditions and responds using a priority system that focuses first on major roadways and emergency routes.

Winter Storm Update | January 24-25

A significant winter storm is expected to impact Fishers beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday. Extreme cold, blowing snow, and hazardous travel conditions are anticipated. City crews are prepared and actively monitoring conditions.

What to Expect:

  • Extreme cold before, during, and after the storm
  • Blowing and drifting snow may re-cover roads after plowing
  • Reduced salt effectiveness due to cold pavement temperatures

City Snow Operations

The Department of Public Works provides snow and ice control for city-maintained streets to ensure safe and orderly travel. Crews prepare year-round and mobilize when winter weather is forecast, with 12-hour shifts implemented during major storms until roads are accessible. See the Snow and Ice Control Plan.

The City of Fishers has activated its Snow Fight plan:

  • More than 60 snowplows deployed
  • Crews working 12-hour shifts through the duration of the storm
  • Roads treated ahead of snowfall and flash freeze conditions

As snow accumulates, crews will plow according to the City’s snow removal priority system.

Snow Plow Priorities

Fishers uses a four-tier snow plow priority system to keep roads safe during winter weather. Primary and secondary roads are serviced first to maintain traffic flow and emergency access, while neighborhood streets are addressed after snowfall slows or ends, as conditions allow. See the snow plow map.

Roadway Priorities

  • Priority 1 – Primary Roads (Blue): Major arterials and routes connecting hospitals, police, and fire stations.
  • Priority 2 – Secondary Roads (Green): High-traffic feeder roads serving schools, parks, businesses, and subdivision main routes.
  • Priority 3 – Subdivision Main Roads (Red): Longer roads within residential neighborhoods.
  • Priority 4 – Subdivision Roads (Purple): Shorter residential streets and cul-de-sacs.

Roads not shown on the snow plow map are outside city limits or privately maintained. Granular salt is used on primary and secondary roads. Salt is not routinely applied in neighborhoods, except at locations with steep grades or sharp curves. During major snow events, crews may return to primary roads multiple times before clearing neighborhood streets after the storm.

Trail Snow Removal

Snow removal on City trails follows this priority order:

  1. Nickel Plate Trail (96th Street to 146th Street)
  2. Geist Greenway (Florida Road to Mud Creek in Avalon)
  3. Connecting paths along 116th Street and 126th Street

Once this core loop is cleared, crews will expand to additional trails as conditions allow.

Reminders for Residents

  • Please remove parked vehicles and basketball goals from neighborhood streets to make way for snow plows
  • Slow down and increase following distance while driving in snowy or icy conditions
  • Givesnowplows plenty of space when driving – do not follow closely
  • Help the Fishers Fire Department and adopt a fire hydrant in your neighborhood. Shoveling around the hydrants near your home ensures that they are easily accessible in case of emergency.
